Colorado College defeated the University of Colorado club team on Friday afternoon in what the Tigers are hoping was a tune-up for next week’s NCAA Tournament.
In her final home appearance, senior attacker Mallory Newton scored twice in a span of 18 seconds during the final minute of the first half to trigger an 8-0 run that gave CC a 12-4 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game.
The product of Darien, Conn., leads the team with 34 goals and 47 points this year, and ranks seventh with 116 career goals and 149 career points.
Midfielder Amanda Howard (Castle Rock, Colo.) and defenders Brittany Roy (Denver, Colo.) and Jaime Webster (Mercer Island, Wash.) also made their final home appearance.
The four seniors have a combined record of 43-18 and have made three consecutive trips to the NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse Championship, including an appearance in the national semifinals in 2005.
Newton had a goal and an assist as the Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Buffs scored four of the next five goals to know the score at 4-4 with 2:55 remaining in the opening 25 minutes.
Sophomore attacker Ginny Rider had a goal and an assist for CC, while sophomore attacker Holly McHugh and freshman attacker Gioia Garden found the net twice.
The Buffs were paced by sophomore midfielder Amber Lister and junior midfielder Rachel Monheit, who each scored a pair of goals and set up another goal.
Junior Hess Van Doren made for saves for CC during the first 28:11, while sophomore Valerie Cranmer had four stops in relief. Freshman Shannon Schroeder had two saves during the opening 28:49 in net.
The Tigers are 10-3 and are hoping to earn a fourth-straight berth in the tournament when the bracket is revealed on Sunday.
