More than a decade after her illustrious career as a forward at Colorado College came to an end, Martina Franko is still playing soccer – on an even bigger stage.
Franko, who now goes by her married named after graduating from CC in 1998 as Martina Holan, is a starting defender for Canada in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games currently taking place in Beijing. Her team, which meets Sweden on Tuesday, has beaten Argentina (2-1) and tied host China (1-1) in its first two Group E matches.

Franko led the Tigers in scoring for three consecutive seasons, collecting 34 points each in her sophomore, junior and senior years. She still ranks as the program's second all-time goals (47) and points (107) producer, and joins Hall of Famer Kerri Tashiro as the only two Colorado College players to reach or surpass 100 points for their careers.
Now a resident of Squamish, British Columbia, Franko was recruited to CC out of Homestead High School in Los Altos, Calif. She moved to Squamish, home of her husband John, in 2003. She has been a member of the Canadian National Team since 2005, helping them win a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Her parents, Dana Holanova and Jaromir Hola, were the Czechoslavakian national figure-skating champions in pairs ice dancing in the 1960s.
Martina, also a Canadian National B licensed coach, served as an assistant coach for the Tigers during the 1998 season after receiving her bachelor's degree in psychology.
