Tigers rally to defeat St. Catherine in five sets

The Colorado College volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat the College of St. Catherine on Friday night in the 2008 Molten Volleyball Pikes Peak Challenge, starting the season with a pair of victories for the fourth consecutive year. 

The Tigers defeated Wisconsin-Platteville 25-9, 25-23, 25-14 in their opener and are tied with No. 15 Wisconsin-Oshkosh atop the tournament standings with a 2-0 record. The Titans defeated rival UWP and Colby-Sawyer College. 

Sophomore outside hitter Emily Perkins had 15 kills, 11 digs and five blocks as CC prevailed after losing the first two sets for the first time since Oct. 22, 2004. Perkins had 12 of her kills in the final three sets.

Senior outside hitter Anna Clithero added 14 kills and a team-high 16 digs. Freshman opposite hitter Meredith Ballard had a team-high 11 kills to pace the Tigers in a 25-9, 25-23, 25-14 victory over UWP in their season opener. 

Ballard hit .474 with only two errors on 19 attacks. Perkins paced the defensive effort with a team-high 14 digs and five blocked shots. 

Sophomore middle blocker Erika Pirotte had a hand in six of CC's 11 blocked shots. The Tigers hit .272 as a team while holding the Pioneers to a .052 percentage. 

The Pikes Peak Challenge will continue on Saturday at 10 a.m. Colorado College will face Colby-Sawyer at noon and UWO in the tournament finale at 6 p.m.
