Backup goaltender shuts down Tigers

CC settles for split with Minnesota State

Dan Tormey, a somewhat forgotten commodity at Minnesota State University, gave his teammates and Colorado College something to remember on Saturday.

In just his second start of the season, the senior goaltender from Syracuse, N.Y., steered away 27 of 28 CC shots in backstopping the Mavericks to a 3-1 victory that earned them a split of their two-game series at the World Arena.

Tormey lost his shutout with 7:24 left to play, when Stephen Schultz redirected Brian Connelly's shot from the point and into the MSU cage during the Tigers' seventh and final power play of the game.

Otherwise, the 6-foot-2, 195-pound net minder was a brick wall.

Despite the loss, Colorado College will wake up Sunday no lower than third in the WCHA standings, pending the outcome of Wisconsin's late game at Alaska Anchorage. CC, which meets the Badgers in Madison next weekend, dropped to 12-7-5 overall and 8-6-2 in league play.

In failing to record to their first sweep since mid-October, however, the Tigers blew a golden opportunity to put some distance between themselves and the teams behind them. They also fell five points behind front-running Denver.

The late tally by Schultz, his second of the series and eighth of the season, instilled some hope into an otherwise frustrating evening. But, with goalie Richard Bachman on the bench in favor of an extra attacker in the final minute, MSU's Rylan Galiardi found the empty net from the right wing to seal the triumph for the Mavericks.

Galiardi set up both of Minnesota State's other two goals by Mick Berge at 5:20 of the first period and Jason Wiley at 3:37 of the second. Bachman finished with 28 saves for the Tigers.
