Once Erin Scott hit the goalpost for Rice University early in Friday's snoozer at Stewart Field, the excitement was pretty much over with.
The visiting Owls and Colorado College went on to finish 110 minutes of play, with neither team scoring in a 0-0 Conference USA tie that clinched a berth in the league playoffs for CC.
The Tigers finished with a 20-15 edge in shots attempted, but other than Scott's point-blank rocket from just inside the left side of the box that ricocheted high off the far post, neither team generated a quality chance in the offensive end.
Colorado College, now 10-5-2 overall and 6-2-1 in conference play, resumes action with another home contest against the University of Houston at noon Sunday.
“We ran into a Rice team that is unbelievably better than its record indicates,” said head coach
Geoff Bennett. “We knew that coming in, and they outworked us for a good portion of the game. It's a good lesson for our kids – that they've got to work hard for the entire 90 minutes every time we play. On the other hand, it's not a loss. That's what we told the team. We've got to come out with a good psyche on Sunday, because we know Houston's going to work just as hard.”
Goalkeeper Meghan Erkel finished with six saves Rice, now 4-10-3 overall and 2-6-1 in C-USA.
Caitlin Hulyo made four stops in net for the Tigers, who blanked their third consecutive opponent.
