Carrie Markel won the 1,000-yard freestyle and took second in the 500 free, but the short-handed Tigers couldn’t keep up with Mesa State and dropped a 212-64 decision to the Mavericks on Saturday at CC’s Schlessman Natatorium.
Markel came from behind to defeat Gina Panacci in the 1,000 free by just .64 seconds, finishing the race in a time of 11:33.30.
“This is a long race that spectators often don’t get excited about, but this one had the crowd on their feet throughout the grueling race,” said Colorado College head coach Anne Goodman James.
Markel nearly went 2-for-2 in the distance events, but lost by just 2.81 seconds to Mesa’s Sarah Hagerstrom in the 500 free, finishing in a time of 533.14.
Senior tri-captain Karen Rasmussen took second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:42.13, while Julia Rubenstein was the runner-up in the 50 free in 26.70.
“Karen showed her leadership with strong finishes in both breaststrokes and in anchoring the freestyle relay,” Goodman James said. “She has started out well ahead of last season and I think exciting things are ahead for her.”
Whitney Petersen and Rubenstein finished second and third, respectively, in the 200 individual medley, with Petersen finishing 4.43 seconds ahead with a time of 2:29.43.
In her first collegiate competition, freshman Nicole Fazio finished second in the 1-meter diving, just 2.78 behind the Mavericks’ Annie Rhoades.
CC will be back in action next Saturday when Colorado School of Mines visits Schlessman Natatorium.
