Perkins named first-team All-American by AVCA

Junior middle blocker Emily Perkins added to her impressive list of honors today when she was named a first-team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Sophomore opposite hitter Meredith Ballard and sophomore setter Amy Schornack received honorable mention recognition.

Perkins is the seventh Tiger to earn first-team honors and the first since Sarah Boyles in 2001. Perkins was named an honorable mention All-American following her freshman season.

Earlier this season, Perkins earned all-West Region honors from the AVCA and was a first-team selection by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

She became only the third player in the 31-year history of the program to record 400 or more kills and digs during the same season, and is the first middle blocker to record that achievement.

Her current 2009 totals of 442 kills and 426 digs are both career highs. Perkins ranks No. 4 on CC's all-time charts with 1,290 kills and 1,185 digs for her career. She also is third all-time with 340 total blocks.

Excluding honorable mentions, Colorado College now boasts a total of 11 AVCA All-Americans.

Ballard, a second-team all-SCAC selection, leads the Tigers with a .299 hitting percentage and is second averaging 2.42 kills per set. She also is third in blocks at 0.52 per set.

Schornack became the sixth player in school history to record 1,000 or more assists in a single season despite playing in a 6-2 offense for the first 17 matches. She also ranks second with 38 service aces and third with 305 digs.

Colorado College plays Washington University at 12:30 p.m. (ET) Thursday in the national quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
