Fazio meets NCAA qualifying mark again

Not even a month into her first collegiate season, Nicole Fazio has already met the NCAA qualifying standard two times on the 1-meter board.

A day after meeting the qualifying standard with a season-best 259.87 points at Wheaton College, Fazio did even better at Tufts University on Friday night when she finished with 264.08 points.

“It was important to reach the qualifying score a second time because it's required to achieve that score twice in order to submit video for NCAA selection,” head coach Anne Goodman James said.

Fazio also won the 3-meter board with 212.18 points in just the second time she has competed in that event this season.

The Tigers got an impressive performance from another first-year swimmer with Julia Rubenstein winning the 200-yard individual medley in a season-best time of 2:28.11 and taking first in the 100 fly in 1:06.70. Her time of 1:17.02 in the 100 breaststroke was good for second place.

Carrie Markel lived up to her own high expectations by winning the 1,000 freestyle by touching the wall with a season-best effort of 11:27.84. She also took second in the 500 free by clocking in at 5:34.54, just .16 seconds off her season best set the day before.

Markel also anchored CC's winning effort in the 200 free relay, teaming up with Mindy Stinchfield, Katie Burns and Whitney Petersen in the final event of the meet.

“Carrie again showed her excellent training by finishing very strong at the end of the 1000 and 500,” Goodman James said.

The Tigers will be idle until Dec. 4-5 when the McMurry University visits Schlessman Natatorium for a pair of meets, the second of which will include Division II Adams State College.
