Melanie Auguste, who led the Colorado College women’s basketball team to a 16-8 record and a berth in the upcoming Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, has been named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Auguste, who owns a 3.74 grade-point average as an economics major, joins Deborah Nalty, a two-time recipient of the award in 1982 and ‘84, as the only players in the program’s history to earn the honor.
The senior point guard owns school records with 602 assists and 243 steals for her career, and is third in all-time scoring (1,557 points) as well as fourth in rebounds (803).
Auguste’s 484 points this season represent a career high and she needs only two more rebounds to equal her previous best of 213 set last year.
Auguste leads the SCAC in scoring (20.2 ppg), assists (7.1) and minutes played (37.7), ranks second in steals (2.3) and is third in rebounding (8.8). Her totals rank third in Division III in assists and 12th in scoring.
CC’s current total of 16 victories is the most for the program since the 1989-90 squad posted a 17-9 record.
The Tigers will play Centre College in the opening round of the SCAC Tournament on Friday night.
