As expected, John Moore was selected in the opening round of the National Hockey League entry draft in Montreal on Friday.
The Columbus Blue Jackets made Moore, one of eight recruits scheduled to join the Colorado College roster as a freshman this fall, the 21st overall pick in the draft. Only one CC player – Mark Stuart of the Boston Bruins – ever has been chosen in the first round before. Stuart also was a No. 21 overall selection. Both he and Moore are defensemen.
Moore, a native of Winnetka, Ill., spent the last two seasons playing at the junior A level with the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League. After finishing fourth overall in scoring among blue-line specialists with 39 points (14-25-39) in 57 games, he was name the USHL Defenseman of the Year. He entered the NHL draft as the highest ranked USHL player by Central Scouting.
Moore won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2008 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge, collecting a pair of assists in five games during his first international hockey experience.
