Mike Guentzel accepts USHL position

CC assistant is new head coach at Des Moines

After 15 years of serving as an assistant coach in the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association, including last season at Colorado College, Mike Guentzel
will have his own team again in 2009-10.

Guentzel, who joined the CC staff late last summer, is leaving the Tigers to
become head coach of the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey
League.

It will be Guentzel's third head coaching stint in the Junior A ranks, as he
previously held similar positions with the USHL's St. Paul Vulcans (1989-92)
and Omaha Lancers (1992-94) before spending 14 seasons (1994-2008) as an
assistant at the University of Minnesota.

A search for his replacement at Colorado College will begin immediately.

“I really appreciate everything Mike did for our program and our team last
season,” head coach Scott Owens said of Guentzel's departure. “He's an
excellent coach and a great hockey person. I wish him well in Des Moines.”

Guentzel worked primarily with CC's forwards in 2008-09. Gabe Guentzel, the
second oldest of his three sons, is a sophomore defenseman with the Tigers.
