After experiencing an unpleasant dose of reality in Seattle last weekend, Colorado College bounced back in style on Friday.
Led by freshman forward
Brittney Lyman, who struck for the first two goals of her collegiate career, the Tigers snapped their two-game losing skid with an inspired 3-0 victory over Texas Christian University at Stewart Field.
In an earlier match kicking off the 2009 CC Invitational, the University of Denver upset 13th-ranked Kansas by a score of 2-1.
Then the home side worked its magic against a TCU squad that had won four of its first five outings this season.
“We were unbelievably impressed with the team's attitude in training this week,” said head coach
Geoff Bennett. “Sometimes it's difficult to come home and get focused after a couple losses on the road like that. But we have outstanding leadership. We know we're a good team and that there's a big picture to have on our minds. And we going to do whatever it takes to reach that big picture.”
Lyman, an Arvada West High School product who had started for the Tigers in their previous four games, entered Friday's contest off the bench just prior to a corner kick by sophomore defender
Beth Wright midway through the first half. After
Lauren Talbot's header of Wright's serve was blocked in the goalmouth, Lyman pounced on the rebound to give her team a 1-0 lead at 21:19.
Lyman and junior forward
Tiffany Brown scored just 4:28 apart early in the second half as CC improved its record to 3-2, including a 3-0 mark at home. Brown's second tally of the season came on a 25-yard rocket from the left side that found the far upper corner of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Caitlin Hulyo needed to make only three saves in recording her third career shutout. Colorado College outshot the visiting Horned Frogs by an 18-8 margin overall, and Bennett was able to use 18 players in the match. The Tigers resume action with a 2:30 p.m. (MT) against Kansas on Sunday.
