Shaner takes 5th on 1-meter board at SCAC's

Joseph Shaner got Colorado College off to a solid start at the 2010 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships by placing fifth in the 1-meter diving on Wednesday night at the University of Louisville's Ralph Wright Natatorium. 

Shaner's career-best 11-dive total of 331.15 points earned the Tigers 14 points and fourth place overall after the first event of the championship.

Centre College's Ryan Rougeux was just behind with 329.35 points, while Ryan Berger from Rhodes College finished with 328.40.

Trinity's Kevin Martin won the event with 448.35 points, followed by Centre's Hunter Hayes with 422.90, and DePauw's Adam Wishart and Patrick Springer, with 372.80 and 357.10, respectively.

Trinity, which had six divers entered in the event, leads the men's standings with 52 points, 16 more than DePauw University, which took third and fourth. Centre is in third with 30 points.

Rhodes, which like CC had just one diver, is fifth with 12 points, followed by Sewanee, which earned 11 points from three divers.   

The SCAC Championships will continue on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. CT with preliminaries in five events. The women will compete on the 3-meter board at 1:30 p.m. CT, while the finals of the swimming events are slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
