Tigers split a pair of 9-0 decisions

Colorado College got back on the winning track with a 9-0 victory over La Sierra University in the second of two matches on Monday. The day got off to a rough start when CC dropped a 9-0 decision against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Sewanee.

Despite using a makeshift lineup in order to rest its top two singles players, the Tigers cruised to their second sweep of the season against the Golden Eagles.

CC took a commanding lead by taking all three doubles points for the third time eight matches, one of which came by default because La Sierra did not have enough players. Evan Jonker and Thomas Modern posted an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Will Lindsay and Zach White won by an 8-1 count.

Sam Barnard and White recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories, while Modern sealed the match when his opponent retired in the second set trailing 6-0, 3-0. Jonker prevailed 6-1, 6-0 in his first match at No. 1 singles.

“La Sierra was missing their 1-3 players and only had five for the match, which allowed us to rest Burt and Zen-Ruffinen who have been struggling with some injuries,” head coach Naren Clark said. “We were a little tired from the earlier match but held it together to cruise to the easy victory.”

Sewanee found a way to take all nine points in a match that included several tight contests. CC had an opportunity to earn one doubles point, but Will Lindsay and White were broken just one time and lost 8-6.

Jonker dropped a 6-2, 7-6(3) decision at No. 2 singles, while Zen-Ruffinen lost 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3.

“We did not have the showing needed against the strong conference opponent,” Clark said. “Sewanee always has a tough lineup so we knew coming in that this was going to be a good challenge. It was clear that they are just a little sharper then us at this point in the season.”

The Tigers play the last of six matches in Southern California on Tuesday morning at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
