DeGayner wins consolation final in 200 freestyle

Jordan DeGayner finished ninth in the 200-yard freestyle by winning the consolation final on Thursday night at the 2010 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.

DeGayner touched the wall in a time of 1:40.59, just .01 second ahead of DePauw's John Cook and .07 in front of Claremont's Blake Weber.

He trailed Cook by .45 seconds after with 50 yards to go, but came from behind with a split of 24.74 to win the race.

Including the preliminary of the 50 free on Wednesday morning, DeGayner won all three of his heats at the NCAA meet and finished the season undefeated in the 200 free.

DeGayner's time was 0.51 faster than the seventh-place finisher in the championship final, but he missed qualifying for that race by .27 seconds during Thursday morning's preliminaries when he finished in a time 1:40.44.

Amherst's Alex Fraser won the event with a time of 1:38.34.

DeGayner competes in his final event, the 100 free, on Saturday.
