Colorado College gave Saint Louis University its best shot, but the Tigers dropped a 9-0 decision to the Division I Billikens on Sunday afternoon at CC's Burghardt Tennis Courts.
SLU served notice during the doubles competition that they would be tough to beat, surrendering just four total points during the three matches.
“I was very impressed with how aggressively their girls came to the net,” head coach Perry Wright said. “They closed well and we were typically left on our heels in the midcourt. We weren't hitting that badly. All of our players were hitting out on their shots.”
The momentum carried through into the singles matches, where the Billikens won all six points in straight sets. But despite winning just eight points, many games went to deuce where the Tigers found it difficult to close out games against their savvy opponents.
Jordan Evans and Tori Marsh were the only CC players to earn a point in both sets. Deanna Thirkell won just one point, but she continually pushed her opposite at No. 2 singles.
“While the scores were less than optimal, the points we had were very good,” Wright said. “Deanna, Jordan, and Tori played great singles matches. Almost all of their games went to deuce, but they were unable to catch those elusive ad points. Deanna was hustling out there and it showed.”
With their two toughest matches behind them, the Tigers will take a 1-2 record into Thursday's match at Claremont Colleges, the first of six in Southern California during Spring Break.
