Another strong showing for distance runners

Wagner leads CC to fifth overall at Grinnell

With Andrew Wagner setting the pace on Saturday, Colorado College's distance runners dominated their events at the Dick Young Classic in Grinnell, Iowa.

Wagner blazed to an individual victory in the 1,500 meters, clocking in with a personal-record 3:57.59 to lead the Tigers to a fifth-place showing in a field of 18 teams. It marked the first time in more than a decade that a CC runner has won a 1,500 race.

The meet was the team's final warm-up before next week's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships n Conway, Ark.

Wagner also was one of five Colorado College representatives to finish among the top 10 in the 5,000 meters, claiming fourth place (15:51.86) behind teammates Jackson Brainerd (15:22.00) and Dan Kraft (15:24.44), who were took second and third, respectively. Robbie Caseria (16:04.51) was sixth and Andrew Vierra (16:39.43) 10th.

CC also placed five runners – all with season bests – among the top 10 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where Ben Taber led the charge with second-place and personal record of of 9:57.16.

Andrew Baird finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 3/4 inches, while Brad Dsida was seventh in the 800 meters with a clocking of 1:58.22. Tyler Thorne posted an 11.49 in the 100 and a 23.16 in the 200 meters, and Travis Boccard soared 18-10 1/2 in the long jump.

Completing the Tigers' contingent in the steeplechase were Max Gerken (fourth at 9:59.71), Mike Gougan (fifth at 10:04.95), Charlie Shaw (seventh at 10:07.78) and Nick Geyer (10th at 10:28.69).
