Montana State-Billings won two matches in third-set super tie-breakers to defeat Colorado College, 6-3, on a windy Thursday afternoon at the Garden of the Gods Club.
The Tigers won the first set in both matches, but watched as the Division II Yellowjackets extended the contests by one service break.
“This match was pretty disappointing because we were so close, but couldn't get the job done as a team,” head coach Perry Wright said. “Playing in wind like that takes some serious mental stamina and, unfortunately, our opponents had more focus and determination.”
Erin Yamamoto and Natalie Donnelly posted a decisive 8-2 victory at No. 2 singles, and the Tigers came within one break of taking a 2-1 lead when Deanna Thirkell and Tori Marsh dropped an 8-6 victory at No. 3.
The match was all square after Thirkell posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles and Britt Swenson prevailed 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3.
CC appeared to be in prime position to win the match after Donnelly and Sally Bryant posted 6-4 victories in the first set at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, but MSU-B rallied to take the second set in each match by the same score. Donnelly lost the super tie-breaker 11-9, while Bryant fell by a 10-5 count.
“Natalie got down early in the tiebreaker 6-1 and fought back to 6 all,” Wright said. “Then she traded points, but couldn't seem to take the lead. Sally did a great job of taking the first set, but she still doesn't have that killer instinct.”
The Tigers started the day with a 6-3 exhibition victory against the New Mexico Military Institute.
Colorado College returns to action on Wednesday at Metropolitan State College in Denver.
