Gambucci to enter CS Sports Hall of Fame

One of Colorado College's all-time greatest student athletes, Andre “Andy” Gambucci has added yet another distinction honoring his long list of lifetime achievements.

Gambucci, a standout for the CC baseball, football and hockey teams during the early 1950s, is among six individuals and two teams that will be inducted into the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame later this year.

The Class of 2010 was announced on Tuesday during a press conference at the World Arena. Induction ceremonies will take place there on Oct. 27.

While he was an excellent centerfielder for the baseball team, Gambucci is best known for his prowess on the gridiron and ice.

In football, the Eveleth, Minn., native was named Rocky Mountain Conference MVP and a unanimous all-league selection as a senior in 1952, when he rushed for 16 touchdowns to break Dutch Clark's school record and finish among the nation's scoring leaders.

In his four seasons (1949-53) of hockey, despite spending most of one playing for the United States Olympic Team that claimed a silver medal at the 1952 Winter Games in Oslo, Norway, Gambucci collected 91 career points (62 goals, 29 assists) for the Tigers. He also was a member of the 1949-50 squad that claimed the program's first of two NCAA championships.

After graduating from Colorado College, he continued his playing career and did some coaching in Italy before returning to the Pikes Peak Region and working as a WCHA referee for 22 years. He also built a very success insurance business, Acordia of Colorado, serving as owner, vice-president and director of marketing prior to his retirement.

Gambucci was inducted into the CC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
