Big Cats at the top of nation’s academic elite

The CC swimming and diving teams added another chapter to their legacy of outstanding performance in the classroom by finishing near the top of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America's All-Academic rankings for the 2009-10 academic year.

The men finished second among 80 squads listed, with a combined 3.52 grade-point average, while the women were third out of 118 programs, at 3.62. To be recognized, teams must maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

CC was the only Division III school to have both teams record a grade-point average of 3.50 or higher and one of only two schools to have both finish among the top 10 in their respective rankings.

“I am always so proud of the way our team balances their academic and athletic pursuits,” head coach Anne Goodman James said. “The consistency with which they exhibit excellence in all parts of their lives is so impressive. After dropping slightly in the rankings last fall, it is great to see our swimmers and divers return to their place among the nation's best.”

Three Tigers received individual accolades. Jordan DeGayner was named a Scholar All-American, while Tom Grossinger and Nicole Fazio received honorable mention recognition.

Earlier this week, the Tigers placed 14 of 19 women and 13 of 16 men on the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's Honor Roll for maintaining a minimum 3.25 GPA during the spring semester.
