Box Score On a day when the offense had a tough time getting on track, Colorado College turned up the defensive intensity during the final seven minutes and pulled out a 53-49 victory over Sewanee.
Sophomore forward
Gracie Rennecker pulled down a career-high eight rebounds and added seven points, none of which were bigger than her two free throws that gave the host Tigers a four-point lead with 23 seconds to play.
Sewanee took its first lead since early in the first half at 47-45 on a pair of free throws by Heather Bier with 6:10 remaining, but managed just two more points the remaining of the game.
Junior forward
Sarah Gunkel tied the game 15 seconds later when she scored from under the basket after taking a feed from freshman guard
Courtney Tyus, and she put CC ahead with 4:25 to play after making the front end of a one-and-one.
Senior guard
Jenny Knapp put CC up by four points when she drained a 3-pointer from the right wing with 3:38 to play, and after Dana Middleton hit a runner in the lane to make the score 51-49, Rennecker sealed the victory from the free-throw line.
Following a Middleton layup with 7:32 to play, the visitors connected on just one of their final nine shots from the floor and then committed a pair of turnovers during the final 1:02.
It marked just second time this season that Colorado College held an opponent to fewer than 50 points, and Sewanee's 29.5-percent shooting from the field was the second lowest by a CC opponent this season.
The Tigers built a 12-point lead when freshman forward Laura Hansen scored under the basket off a feed from
Laura Hoffman with 5:37 remaining.
Sewanee answered with seven consecutive points to pull to within 28-23 on a basket by Virginia Zakas, but the Tigers scored the final five points to build a 10-point advantage after 20 minutes. The visitors shot 31.3-percent in the first half from the floor and missed all three of their free-throw attempts.
Senior forward
Becky Luetjen grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to help Colorado College finish with a 49-37 advantage on the glass. She also had seven points, five assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
Middleton led all scorers with 16 points and added five steals.
CC improved to 9-7 overall and 5-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Sewanee slipped to 8-7 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
Colorado College returns to the road next weekend for conference games at Millsaps College and Rhodes College on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
