It didn't take long for freshman Danielle Wahl to make an impact for the Colorado College swimming and diving program.

In her first appearance at the Schlessman Natatorium, Wahl shattered school records for a pair of distances en route to a dominating victory in the 1,650-yard freestyle in the first swimming event of the 14th Annual Colorado College Classic on Friday night.

Wahl, a product of Cheyenne Mountain High School, chopped 29.31 seconds off Leanne Dalton's 1,000-meter record of 11:15.92 which was set in 2006. She finished the 1,650 free in 17:58.94, which was 21.79 seconds faster than the previous standard also set by Dalton.

Senior Carrie Markel and freshman Katie Martinez finished second and third, respectively, with Markel touching the wall 14.37 seconds in front with a time of 19:37.52. All three Tigers eclipsed the team's previous season-best time in the event.

In the first event of the night, junior Nicole Fazio met the NCAA provisional qualifying score in the 1-meter diving while finishing second with 418.90 points.

After two events, the Colorado College women hold a 97-34 lead over the Colorado School of Mines. Colorado Mesa University is third with 34 points, followed by Metro State College (25) and the University of Colorado club team (15).

The Colorado College Classic resumes on Saturday with 16 events. The preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., followed by the finals at 5:30 p.m. The 3-meter diving is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

The meet concludes on Sunday with the final 16 events.
