Box Score Colorado College opened its 2012-13 season with a 75-53 loss to the College of Saint Benedict during the 2012 Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening in Reid Arena.
The Tigers held a 15-10 lead midway through the first half, but the Blazers fought back with a 10-0 run that began with two made free throws by Mattie Lueck.
CC regained its lead when senior
Marissa Gradoz made two free throws with 5:24 left in the first half to ignite an 8-2 run and take a 23-22 lead. However, St. Benedict came right back and closed out the half with a 10-4 run to take a 32-27 lead into intermission.
The Tigers were unable to climb their way back in the second half as the Blazers continued to slowly build their lead and take the edge from CC.
Ball control troubled the Tigers as they turned the ball over 27 times, which gave the St. Benedict 25 points off of CC's miscues. Fouls also troubled the Tigers as the fouled 23 times to give the Blazers 21 unanswered points.
All three of CC's seniors scored in double figures to lead the team offensively. Senior
Sarah Gunkel led the team with 17 points, while senior
Kalli Kemling added 12 and senior
Marissa Gradoz chipped in 10.
Gunkel also led the team on the boards with nine rebounds. Sophomore
Courtney Tyus led the Tigers dishing out five assists.
Emily Lueck led St. Benedict with 16 points. Mattie Lueck and Alexander Tish added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Colorado College continues tournament play at home as it hosts Macalester College on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Reid Arena.
