Tigers score three of SCAC’s top awards

Fresh off of their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship, three members of the Colorado College women's lacrosse team received the league's top individual honors after a ballot of the SCAC's head coaches.

Senior midfielder Grace Maloney was named Offensive Player of the Year, junior goaltender Abby Fink was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year, and Susan Stuart shared Coach of the Year honors with two of her peers.

In addition to Maloney and Fink, senior midfielder Bailey Terhune and junior attacker Ellie Cole were first-team all-conference selections. Junior defender Nancy Makuch and junior midfielder Ginna Oates were named to the all-SCAC second team.

Maloney paced the CC attack with career highs of 47 goals, 26 assists, 73 points and four game-winning goals. One of the most versatile two-way players in the program's history, she also paced the team with 47 draw controls and 35 ground balls.

A product of Wilmette, Ill., Maloney currently is tied for sixth in the program's record books with 126 career goals. She ranks sixth all alone with 183 points and 57 assists. Maloney became the first Tiger to eclipse the 40-goal mark in a single season since Kate Fitzgerald (47) and Robin Harvey (41) in 2007, as well as the first CC player to record 70 points in one campaign since Cassie Abel (78) in 2004.

Fink, who has started every game in goal during her first three seasons, ranks 10th in Division III with a .536 saves percentage and 16th with a career-best 7.73 goals-against average. She was even better in conference games, posting a 7.14 GAA.

A native of Plymouth, Minn., Fink recorded double-digit saves on eight occasions, including a season-high 16 during victories over Regis University (9-6) and Fort Lewis College (14-12).

Terhune, the team's top defensive midfielder, surpassed the combined totals from her first three seasons with 50 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers. She became the fourth Tiger to record 50 or more ground balls in a single season and ranks fifth in caused turnovers.

Cole finished second on the team with 24 assists and 51 points, and tied for second with 27 goals and a pair of game winners. In just two seasons, she already ranks No. 17 with 33 career assists, No. 18 with 88 points and No. 19 with 55 goals.

Makuch started all 18 games and anchored the defense that ranks No. 17 in Division III allowing just 7.78 goals per game. The Tigers also were No. 29 with a 5.94 average margin of victory. Makuch tied for second with a career-high 14 caused turnovers and grabbed 20 ground balls.

Oates was a contributor everywhere on the field. At the defensive end, she was fifth with 34 ground balls and tied for sixth with 11 caused turnovers. In the offensive zone, she tied for ninth with 11 goals and tied for 12th with 14 points. She also was second on the team with 31 draw controls.

Stuart, who shared the Coach of the Year award with Tracy Cepnio (Millsaps College) and Julie Beer (Centre College), led the Tigers to a 15-3 record and the program record for victories in a single season. The old standard of 13-3 was first set in 2004 and tied last year.
