Day paces Tigers at SCAC Championships

2013 SCAC Championships - Thursday Results

Junior Brenna Day won the 50-yard freestyle and was part of a record-setting effort in the 400 medley relay as Colorado College clawed its way into second place after the first full day of the 2013 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. 

Trinity University leads the women's standings with 333.50 points, followed by CC with 220.5. Centenary College is third with 167.00, followed by Southwestern University (119.00) and Austin College (44.00).  

Day gave Colorado College its first championship on the women's side, winning the 50 free in 24.30 seconds. She beat Trinity's Jennifer Ince to the wall by .09.

In the consolation final, freshman Erin Holmes finished 10th with a time of 25.34, freshman Rebecca Adams took 13th in 25.84, and sophomore Emily Houghton was 15th in 25.96.

In the final event of the night, freshman Olivia Dilorati broke the school record in the 100 backstroke, posting a split of 58.59 while leading off the 400 medley relay. Jackie Nonweiler, Megan Gillespie and Day kept up the pace and the Tigers took second in a CC record time of 4:00.18.

Freshman Codi Haigney finished fourth in the 500 free, cutting 27.53 seconds off her season-best time to finish in 5:08.89. She touched the wall just .15 seconds behind Trinity's Leah Selznick in the battle for third place.

The Tigers took the top four spots in the consolation final, led by freshman Kathryn Dalton and sophomore Emma Holmes who tied with a time of 5:19.95. Freshman Kaityln Martinez was next in 5:33.93, followed by senior Elizabeth Weirich who was only .17 seconds behind. Sophomore Kelsey Smith finished 15th overall, giving Colorado College points from six swimmers in the event.

Gillespie came from behind on the final leg of the 200 individual medley to earn a tie for fourth place with a season-best time of 2:12.87. She made up .74 seconds to tie Trinity's Leslie Butts.

Freshman Annalise Grigereit also reached the finals and finished seventh in 2:15.79. Junior Molly Brown took 13th with a time of 2:21.27, while sophomore Carey Colbert was 14th in 2:27.62.

Colorado College began the day with 54 points in the 200 free relay.

The team of Houghton, Adams, Erin Homes and Day finished third in a season-best time of 1:39.94. The foursome chopped 4.51 seconds off the team's previous best, but they touched the wall .76 behind second-place Southwestern. Trinity won the event with a time of 1:36.90.

In the consolation final, Grigereit, Emma Holmes, Weirich and Martinez beat TU by .09 seconds. CC's time of 1:41.98 would have been fourth in the championship race.

The SCAC Championships continue at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning with the preliminaries in five events.
