Lammers is SCAC Man of the Year

Even after graduating, Nick Lammers continues to add feathers to his cap.

Lammers, who received his diploma from Colorado College on May 20, has been named the inaugural Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Man of the Year.

A center back on the men's soccer team that shut out 12 opponents during the 2012 season, the San Antonio, Texas native earlier was honored as SCAC Defensive Player of the Year and emerged as one of three Tigers earning Academic All-America recognition. He was a two-time all-West Region and all-SCAC selection, earning those accolades both as a junior and senior.

Lammers also excelled in the classroom, completing majors in both philosophy and physics while posting a cumulative grade-point average of 3.88. He plans to return to CC in the fall as a paraprofessional in the physics department, from which he received the prestigious Wilbur Wright Memorial Prize as well as the Cowperthwaite Award for Excellence in Physics. He also graduated with distinction in philosophy and recently was included among 11 former Colorado College student-athletes named to the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

The SCAC Man of the Year honor was created prior to the 2012-13 academic year and, moving forward, will be announced annually in conjunction with the league's Woman of the Year award.

"It is an honor for Colorado College to have Nick Lammers selected as the inaugural SCAC Man Of the Year," said Tigers head coach Horst Richardson. "He combined academic rigor with a high level of soccer talent to become an outstanding student and a stellar defender on our team. From an unassuming newcomer four years ago, he developed into a pillar of strength on defense and a leader on and off the field."

After being selected as the team's Most Improved Player following his sophomore season, Lammers earned CC's Defender of the Year award as both a junior and a senior. He was voted team MVP at the end of the 2012 campaign, after helping the Tigers to a second-place regular season finish in the SCAC, a 14-5-3 overall mark, and the program's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2004. They were 9-0-1 at home.

"His tenacity certainly contributed to [our] undefeated home season and trip to the NCAAs," Richardson said. "We are extremely proud of him."

In addition to his outstanding work academically and on the field of play, Lammers has been engaged in several voluntary activities away from campus. He helped coach a youth football team in Colorado Springs the last four years, and in his hometown of San Antonio, he spent two hours twice a week with the Animal Defense League during the summer of 2010. A year later, he traveled to South America and worked with kindergarten students in Cuzco, Peru, daily for three weeks.

The SCAC Man of the Year award recognizes senior student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. Lammers was one of four outstanding nominees considered by a committee comprised exclusively of senior woman administrators from the league's member schools. The other candidates were Erick DelaFuente (tennis) of Trinity University, Alen Michael (basketball) of Austin College, and Evan Perkins (soccer) of Southwestern University.
